How does hail protection netting work, and will it harm sunlight, rain or airflow?
Hail netting acts as a barrier that intercepts hailstones before they can strike crops, absorbing or deflecting their impact.
The net is designed to still allow rain, sunlight, and air to pass through (albeit with some light diffusion) so that plant growth is minimally affected.
Premium nets also include UV stabilization to resist degradation under sunlight.
What types (mesh densities, materials) of hail netting are available and how do I choose?
Netting is commonly made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or UV-stabilized polyethylene yarns.
Mesh density / weight (gsm) and weave type determine strength. Heavier / denser nets are better in regions with large hail or severe storms.
Color choice can also influence light diffusion / shading (e.g. black or gray nets may block more light) and UV durability.
How should I install and maintain hail netting to ensure long service life?
Installation: Use proper support structures (posts, wires or frames) spaced appropriately. The net must be tensioned evenly (not over-stretched) to absorb impact but avoid tearing.
Anchoring & fixing: Secure the edges and use clips, ropes, or fasteners designed for netting to avoid slipping during storms.
Maintenance: Regularly inspect the mesh for tears, especially after storms. Repair small holes early before they expand under tension.
Storage between seasons: When hail risk is low, remove or fold nets carefully, store in dry conditions, and avoid UV overexposure. This helps prolong net life.
